An Icicle

Image
A sense of what? A sense of belief. A belief in the way that snow falls on the leaf. A belief in the way an icicle melts, but immediately refreezes. Simply extending, growing, becoming ancient despite just being created.  An icicle is seconds ticking by; an icicle is tears that a stiff tree cries. An icicle is a razor, dangerous and cold, freezing to touch but twinkling like gold. We are powerless as we surrender, and melt to the noxious beat of the rhyme. But an icicle melts and freezes, recklessly careless of exterior forces of time.

I Am Cold

Image
As leaves fall, autumn descends. The sun fades away behind the bends. The moon becomes powerful, mightily reigns as the wolves howl mournfully, the lament of Cain. Night blankets day, like cold penetrates warm. Shivering replaces sweat, freezing is the norm. The dark grows deeper, silhouettes appear- Frozen upon mine cheek, frozen is my fear. Muscles grow stiff. Feet grow swelled; Snow weighs down, eyelids are welled shut. Now the blackness I cannot escape, and dissolved is my figure, disintegrated my shape. I join the darkness, become a searing cold. My eyes can now open, my heart grows bold; I seek the sun to harness her power- incarcerate her warmth, force her to cower. Cower before the moon, the effervescence glows. The small yet mighty, casting an eerie light. Shows what is slithering and crawling all around, illuminates the shadows that lay writhing on the ground. The world is impure, never again clean; maliciously angry, intentionally mean. Th...

Some Rocks

Image
A wise man once said, you should stand on your head. The world becomes upside down and the forgotten become the renowned. a new direction is a great tool wises you right up, no longer a fool. Blood pounding in my brain, as if my neck's a cloud of rain! but it's a gentle rain, soft and refreshing no umbrella needed, I am guessing. So stand on your head, and open your eyes and try perspective on for size. Some Grass and Rocks on Aviezer

An Excerpt

In almost a drunken stupor I clambered over the rail separating the conducted sidewalk to the free sea. I stumbled over unexpectedly slippery rocks covered with seaweed and the little tough rough shell things- barnacles? I had my eyes fixed on a rock that protruded into the waters, surrounded on all sides by the gentle yet crashing tide. Despite the tightness and security of my boots, I didn’t deem it feasible at the time to attempt to reach that rock, so I satisfiedly settled for the rock behind it. I perched upon it and as the wind and the salty waves began permeating the air around me, I grew grateful for my two sweaters and longsleeves. I rocked and shook on that rock. And I surrounded myself with words and song and peace and speech. I conversed and argued, and prayed and recited poetry. I sung and I screamed, I challenged and I accepted. I cried and I felt proud. I grew in the eyes of man, and shrank in the eyes of the sea. The sea rose and trembled and I ros...

Happy New Year!

Yesterday I took a trip to Ramallah with two alums and a current sophomore. With us traveling from Jerusalem was a Palestinian student, and we met up with two more Palestinian students in Ramallah. We walked around, we saw the loud, crowded, bustling, jaywalking center of town, and we also had a quiet lunch. Walking back to the bus, we bumped into a massive rally, where thousands upon thousands of people were gathered. Soldiers marched down the street, armed and in full uniform behind a marching band, and bystanders lined the side of the road and climbed street lights. The rally, we found out later, was for the 50th anniversary of the Fatah party, the ruling party of the Palestinian Authority. Walking through the rally definitely made me very tense, but meeting the wonderful Palestinian students and staff allowed the entire day to be an excellent journey and a great success. In the middle of the twenty-five minute ride from Ramallah to Jerusalem, everyone has to get off the b...
